All signs give evidence that your tooth has developed a cavity. Our cosmetic dentist serving Fairfax VA, knows when you were a child you may have had metal fillings. Perhaps now you lean towards the attractive ceramic ones. So isn’t that all there is to know about filling options?
But have you heard of dental inlays or onlays?
McMillan Sedation Dentistry recognizes that traditional fillings serve their purpose in repairing a cavity-damaged tooth. However, in order to perform this procedure effectively, a percentage of the tooth must be removed, reducing the strength of that tooth by up to 50 percent.
On the other hand, repairing a cavity with inlays or onlays requires removing less of your tooth. By using special high-strength resins, the “filling” can actually increase the strength of a tooth by up to 75 percent!
What’s involved in getting an inlay or onlay? During your initial dental visit, after removing the damaged part of your tooth, a gum mold will be taken to allow the laboratory to construct an exact fit for an inlay or onlay. This will be matched to your natural tooth color. Your second and final visit allows for the installation. Using special technology, the tooth-to-restoration margin will be finished and polished to such a super-fine degree that recurrent decay will be all but impossible thereafter, providing proper hygiene is implemented. Inlay or onlay fillings frequently outlast the more traditional fillings, retaining their function between 10 and 30 years.
